Album: Chicago (270 images)

In mid-September I flew to Chicago for a business trip. While there I took a day off to play tourist, visiting downtown, the John Hancock Center, the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, Millenium Park, and (of course) the Sears Tower.

A neighboring plane at Sea-Tac on the way out. It was a busy morning at the airport. Lining up for departure. Heading North after takeoff. Mercer Island and downtown Bellevue. I-90, the Seattle end. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure we flew over the Chicago portion a few hours later. Mercer Island. I liked the wake trails made by the boats. Foothills and Mount Rainier. Mt. St. Helens (?) and Rainier. A small part of the Motorola office in Libertyville. Here comes my ride to downtown. Metra commuter rail. It's an imposing train. I snagged a seat on the upper level. The Sears tower on the way into Union Station. In the Great Hall at Union Station. The other side. img_4182.jpg Peeking at the Sears Tower from the bus outside Union Station. The Carbide and Carbon Buidling. I liked the architecture and colors. NBC Studios. Looking up the Chicago River. A new Trump tower being finished. The John Hancock Center hiding in the distance. Another tour boat. Heading into the Locks to get into Lake Michigan. I didn't know it before, but apparently back in the day the flow of the Chicago River was reversed, which if why they need to Locks. Starting to fill up. A lighthouse in the distance. The Hancock Center, Chicago's third-tallest building. img_4196.jpg img_4197.jpg img_4198.jpg The North Shore of downtown Chicago. sta_4199.jpg stb_4200.jpg The tall white building in the center is the Aon building, the second-tallet in Chicago. Navy Pier. Navy Pier and downtown. img_4206.jpg img_4207.jpg img_4208.jpg img_4209.jpg About to get run over. img_4211.jpg The Hancock Center behind Navy Pier. img_4213.jpg Sears Tower. img_4215.jpg img_4216.jpg img_4217.jpg img_4218.jpg img_4219.jpg img_4220.jpg img_4221.jpg img_4222.jpg Sears Tower and a water taxi. The Adler Planetarium. The South Shore of Downtown Chicago. img_4225.jpg sta_4226.jpg stb_4227.jpg stc_4228.jpg img_4229.jpg Soldier Field, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Field Museum. img_4231.jpg img_4232.jpg img_4233.jpg img_4234.jpg img_4235.jpg img_4236.jpg img_4237.jpg img_4238.jpg img_4239.jpg img_4240.jpg img_4241.jpg Hancock Center and the Ferris Wheel. img_4244.jpg img_4245.jpg img_4246.jpg The Central Shore of downtown. sta_4247.jpg stb_4248.jpg stc_4249.jpg std_4250.jpg img_4251.jpg The Locks. img_4253.jpg Back in the Chicago River. img_4255.jpg The new Chicago Spire is being built here. It will be 2000 feet tall, more than 500 feet taller than the Sears Tower. The Aon buidling. A fountain. Apparently once an hour it shoot s jet of water all the way across the river. The Trump building. There were a ton of these bridges. The Wrigley Buidling. img_4262.jpg img_4263.jpg img_4264.jpg img_4265.jpg Weird. img_4267.jpg img_4268.jpg There was a circular rainbow in the air over the United buidling. img_4270.jpg img_4271.jpg This building was enormous. Apparently it was the first buidling in the US to get its own zip code, and has its own police and fire departments. Over 4 million square feet. Big and blurry. The Boeing buidling. So this is where they moved to. img_4276.jpg img_4277.jpg img_4278.jpg Sears Tower. Sears Tower. Sears Tower. img_4282.jpg img_4283.jpg img_4284.jpg img_4285.jpg Looking up through one of the bridges. img_4287.jpg There's that giant buidling again. img_4289.jpg img_4290.jpg img_4291.jpg img_4292.jpg img_4293.jpg img_4294.jpg img_4295.jpg img_4297.jpg img_4298.jpg img_4299.jpg img_4300.jpg img_4301.jpg Looking up from the base of the Hancock Center. Navy Pier from the Hancock Center. img_4304.jpg img_4305.jpg img_4306.jpg The Sears Tower from the Hancock Center. img_4308.jpg img_4309.jpg img_4310.jpg img_4311.jpg img_4312.jpg This was really high. You could see realyl far away. Rooftop grass. Looking North from the Hncock Center. Looks like a nice beach. img_4317.jpg This made me dizzy. It's to see, but there was a helicopter out over the lake, LOWER than the buidling I was standing in. img_4320.jpg Helicopter again, with more perspective. img_4322.jpg img_4323.jpg img_4324.jpg img_4325.jpg img_4326.jpg img_4327.jpg That's a lot of apartments. Back outside. img_4330.jpg Sears Tower from Grant PArk. This run down little shack looked really out of place. Onward to the Museum. The Field Museum. Sears Tower from the Shedd Aquarium. img_4336.jpg img_4337.jpg img_4338.jpg Shedd Aquarium. Birds in the Aquarium. Turtle. Tiny little monkeys. At the Aquarium. Go figure. Weird monkey. img_4344.jpg Giant turtle. img_4346.jpg I think this was a shark. Cute sleeping otter. This snapping turtle looked mean. img_4354.jpg He really didn't seem to like me. img_4356.jpg I thought this turtle was a rock until I took a second look. Turtle or rock? img_4359.jpg img_4360.jpg Spiky Creatures. A blue iguana. img_4364.jpg Grumpy fish. img_4368.jpg Chameleon. It moved very slowly. img_4371.jpg img_4372.jpg These were the laziest eels I've ever seen. They looked dead, and didn't move the entire time I was watching them. Still playing dead. img_4379.jpg Well hello there. Weird fish with a prong nose and big mouth. img_4384.jpg img_4385.jpg img_4386.jpg Lungfish. img_4388.jpg img_4389.jpg img_4390.jpg The little yellow fish were trying to steal the turtle's food. I was hoping he would eat one of them, but he didn't. You are an ugly fish. img_4395.jpg img_4396.jpg This little guy was very interested in my camera. img_4399.jpg img_4401.jpg Sleepy seahorse. img_4403.jpg img_4404.jpg These seahorses looked like sticks or seaweed. img_4406.jpg img_4407.jpg Shark. img_4409.jpg img_4411.jpg Giant crab. Spider Crab. Back outside. The Field Museum. img_4418.jpg img_4419.jpg They had this creepy fake town inside. Sue, the largest, most complete T-Rex skeleton. This is a rock, even though it seems like it might be alive. Jade flutes. This reminded me of the one I have at home. img_4425.jpg I thought this would give me nightmares. It was probably half again as big as me. Thank goodness these things are extinct. Sue again. The Lawn at Millenium Park. The Cloud Gate, which looks like a giant shiny bean. Reflecting the skyline. I got a picture of myself. Underneath the bean, weird optical effects. That's me upside down in the center. Me again. Looking out. img_4436.jpg Another reflection. At the base of the Sears Tower. Night view, looking South from the Sears Tower. Catching the tail end of the sunset. The Hancock Center has some very bright white lights at the top. img_4444.jpg img_4445.jpg img_4446.jpg My camera is not so great at taking pictures at night. img_4448.jpg img_4450.jpg This building was very bright. img_4453.jpg Back outside. Looking up the River at night. Heading back to the train. My ride back to Libertyville. img_4460.jpg Look out, a dinosaur at the airport!
